The west coast leg of the ASP North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) has got underway with the first round of the Van's Pier Classic completed.
In decent conditions at Huntington Beach in California the first eight heats of the second round were also completed as well as the entire first round.
Andrew Gessler was the top performer of the day with a score of 15.50 out of 20 in his first round heat.
"Someone gave me the wave magnet today. I've got a good shape from Matt Biolis, and I feel like I got lucky. I felt like my heat was pretty inconsistent, and I happened to get the good ones, so I'm feeling lucky right now," Gessler told ASPworldtour.com.
Richie Collins, who used to surf in the ASP World Tour, was also on good form, beating the youngsters to make it through to round three.
Huntington Beach is a city in Orange County.
