Mark Warren, the surfing pioneer, has been announced as the 2008 Hall of Fame Inductee at the Australian Surfing Awards.
The former New South Wales junior champion was one of the world's first pro surfers and has also been a national coach, an ASP tour representative and a media sports personality.
"If surfing is Hawaii's gift to the world then I'm amazed how, for me, surfing is the gift that keeps on giving. I get just as big a thrill now out of a half decent wave as I did when I first started surfing over 40 years ago," said Warren.
He added that equally it is a thrill for him to be acknowledged by Surfing Australia in this way, saying: "it's a privilege".
As expected, Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore won the male and female Surfer of the Year awards.
Fanning and Gilmore are both in action currently in the Quiksilver pro and Roxy Pro respectively. Fanning will face the wildcard entrant Julian Wilson in the third round.
