The ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) will head to Brazil next month for the Hang Loose Pro Contest 2008 and the Brazilian surfers are looking to build on their good start to the season.
With Pablo Paulino winning the World Pro Junior title and Bruna Shmitz also starting the season well with a second place at the Roxy Surf Festival, Brazilian surfing appears to be on the way up.
It will be the 23rd year of the event which has on offer $110,000 (£55,000) prize money and 2,500 points for the World Qualifying Series ratings.
Last year's winner was Aritz Aranburu and other previous winners of the event include Bobby Martinez and Jean da Silva.
The WQS tour was won by South African Jordy Smith last year and he will now surf on the ASP World Championship Tour. Current ASP World champion Mick Fanning won the WQS in 2001.
In the Roxy Surf Festival, Shmitz lost out to Australian teenage Sally Fitzgibbons in the final.
