Rounds one and two of the Rip Curl Women's Pro got underway yesterday and it was the dominated by the current ASP world champion Stephanie Gilmore.
Gilmore claimed the highest heat total of the day with a score of 17.40 out of 20 in her first round heat against Jacqueline Silva and Alana Blanchard, to ease straight into round three.
"It feels really good to get through the first round. Both Jacqueline (Silva) and Alana (Blanchard) are really good surfers and are capable of getting big scores so I just went out and tried to start off strong and post a few bigger scores," Gilmore said.
Gilmore will now go up against American Karina Petroni in the next round, who beat Rebecca Woods and Julia De La Rosa in the second round.
The top two surfers from the first round heats are sent automatically through to the third round, while the surfers who finish bottom of the first round heat take each other on in the second round in order to progress.
No surfing took place in the men's event as the competition was called off before they had a chance to surf.
