Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew, the president of the Association of Surfing Professionals, rolled back the years when he competed at the annual Rip Curl MP Classic.
The 1978 ASP World Champion took to the surf for his first competitive performance since the ASP World Masters Championships in 2002 to honour his former surfing buddy Michael Peterson.
Bartholomew told goldcoast.com: "We had a pretty sad few weeks here with the passing of my best friend Dennis and I just had the urge to compete in the MP Classic and to celebrate the time we had together.
"Most events held in people's names are when they are gone and after Denis' beautiful send off and after so many beautiful things were said about him I though, 'why don't we celebrate people and do things while we are here'."
The surfing legend has ruled out extending his comeback to the Quicksilver Pro World tour event, saying that "could be stretching it".
Bartholomew was appointed president of the ASP in 1999.
