Extreme conditions hitting the Gold Coast could create an interesting environment for the opening contest of the ASP World Championship Tour season, the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast.
Big swells have been pounding the coast since the start of the year and although they could create excellent surfing condition, the storms have also done damage to the tournament area.
ASP president Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew, said: "Since New Year's we have had multiple swell, storm and even flood events which have ripped the sand out of Snapper."
He added that two weeks ago he was concerned but "desirable conditions" have since helped stream the sand back into Snapper and after another week the tournament should be "okay".
The waiting period for the contest starts on February 23rd after the trials two days before, which will give a wildcard entry to the winner.
All of the big surfers will be present at the competition, including last year's ASP WCT champion Mick Fanning and runner up Taj Burrow.
