Tiago Pires, the first Portuguese surfer to compete on the World Championship Tour (WCT) has said that the waves at Bells Beach are similar to his home beach.
Pires, who is one of four Europeans on the WCT this year, is currently preparing for the start of the Rip Curl Pro which has been delayed due to poor swells.
"We just arrived yesterday at Bell's, and the waves are so similar to my home town of Ericeira! It's really cool to feel as good as home! I'm gonna surf as most as I can and just get my equipment ready to go," Pires told ASP Europe.
He added that he has taken about ten boards with him to Bells Beach and he is "still testing them all".
Pires had a poor start to the WCT tour after being knocked out by Leonardo Neves in round two at the Quiksilver Pro.
Among the other Europeans hoping to impress at Bells Beach is Jeremy Flores, the highly-rated Frenchman who was given the Rookie of the Year award last season.
