Australian surfers have dominated proceedings as the Roxy Surf Festival gets underway at Philip Island.
Highly rated international surfers were dumped out of the competition in the early rounds yesterday as the locals took control.
Samantha Cornish, top seed for this event and world number four, told Surfing Australia: "The Australians have a strong surfing background and we've got a lot of young talented girls competing at this event. It's got to be pretty disappointing for the internationals who got knocked in their first heats today."
Coco Ho was one of the biggest casualties, losing out to Rebecca Oakley and Jessica Hickson in the first round. Ho is the daughter of the big wave legend Michael Ho.
Round one and two were finished in the morning with round three expected to go ahead tomorrow. The seeds, including Cornish, Amee Donohoe and Jessi Miley-Dyer enter the competition at the third round stage.
The Roxy Surf Festival was won by Stephanie Gilmore last year, but the current ASP World Champion is not competing this year due to sponsor commitments.
