Tiago Pires will become the first Portuguese surfer to compete on the ASP World Championship Tour this year, after qualifying among the top 45 surfers in the world last season.
Pires, who has won the ASP WQS six-star event Buondi Billabong Pro twice in the past, will be competing with the elite surfers along with fellow Europeans Jeremy Flores, Miky Picon and Aritz Aranburu.
"I am very happy and honoured to fly the flag this year at all major events around the world. I know it can have a good impact for the sport in Portugal, even though surfing already has a good visibility there!" Pires told Surfers Village.
He added that last year he felt like a lot of people were watching his heats in the WQS and this year he is sure that he will have even more support from Portugal and that is "really something special".
The ASP World Championship Tour begins with the Quicksilver Pro on the Gold Coast on February 23rd.
