Former ASP World Champion Andy Irons recaptured some of his old form to cruise past wildcard entrant Tamaroa McComb in the second round of the Quiksilver Pro.
The Hawaiian scored 16.37 out of 20 compared to McComb's 5.90 and also clinched the highest single wave score of the day with 9.70.
"I haven't got a 9.00 in about six months so it felt unreal. I haven't made heats in a while and I guess I just haven't been into it. In the off season I really had to think about that and now I’m really psyched. I want to be here and I want to do well," Irons said.
He added that he likes to win heats and it feels good: "it's my new buzz".
Dayne Reynolds and Jordy Smith, the two rookies made it through the second round with wins against Royden Bryson and Daniel Wills respectively.
The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast is the first event on the ASP World Championship Tour.
